The Spongetones were invited to record an ABC World News Now (WNN) Polka, which aired on the show in 2008. In addition, Spongetones song Skinny was used as the theme song for the WNN Entertainment News segment, "The Skinny"

Highlights and Accolades

Four Spongetones songs were rated on American Bandstand: She Goes Out with Everybody, Torn Apart, (My Girl) Maryanne, and Tom.

The Spongetones were mentioned numerous times in Billboard Magazine. Under its Top Album Picks, it said, "The Spongetones bring a heartfelt appreciation to the genre that is positively entertaining." March 24, 1983.

The Spongetones were reviewed by Rolling Stone Magazine in the September 15, 1983 edition and again in the May 10, 1984 edition.

Goldmine Magazine called the Spongetones "the finest example of pure, unadulterated Beatlesque joy to emanate from the indie pop underground" in November 2006. 

The Charlotte Observer reported on the growing popularity of The Spongetones.

MTV.com calls the Spongetones one of the most underrated power pop bands of the '80s. 

In their article, Power Pop 101, the A.V. Club says that She Goes Out With Everybody” is the best Merseybeat song ever written and recorded by an American band.

Drummer Rob Thorne was inducted into the NC Music Hall of Fame
